#025 - The Wealth Wire - Can AI agents save me money?

This week: Are AI agents all that? → Rates keep rising → Overreach by HMRC → Your worst enemy → Stick to the plan

THE BIGGEST LESSON:

This week, I had a genuine "aha" moment with AI.

It’s only my third one since ChatGPT launched back in November 2022. It happened when I upgraded to X Premium and decided to build my own "Squad" of Grok Bots.

I’ve been putting this off for a while, but the non-stop noise around AI agents on X finally convinced me to bite the bullet.

Honestly? I was hooked within minutes.

In less than half an hour, the agent scanned my Gmail account and proactively knocked off several personal admin tasks that had been sitting on my to-do list for weeks (the ones I kept promising my wife I’d sort out!).

I’m just getting started and will keep you updated on my progress. But it really got me thinking: How can AI help busy 9-to-5 professionals slash spending and invest more to reach financial independence faster?

Its audited my subscriptions and found a few things for me to remove or update. I've now asked it to run a monthly audit automatically, so I dont have to remember to.

I'll keep you posted on what more I find as my journey with AI agents continues...

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

Inflation jumps to 3.5%

Prices rose 3.5% in the year to September, up from 3.1% in August, marking the highest level in almost a year. Fuel caused the most damage, with transport costs up 6.6% and housing/household bills up 5.3%. Food rose a modest 1.3%.

With average pay growing at 3.7%, the "real" pay rise for most of us is practically zero.

  • What it means for you: If your household spends £2,000 a month, you now need an extra £70 a month just to stand still. If your annual pay rise was under 3.5%, you’ve effectively taken a pay cut. Keep that figure in mind for your next salary review.

Base rate rise looking likely

Economists polled by Reuters expect the Bank of England to raise the Bank Rate from 3.75% to 4% next Thursday (5 November). Governor Andrew Bailey has warned that a prolonged energy shock makes this hike difficult to avoid.

Average fixed mortgages are already hovering around 6%, and deals are lasting an average of just 13 days before being pulled by lenders. On the plus side, savers can now lock in 1-to-5-year fixes paying over 5% for the first time since 2023.

  • What it means for you: If your fixed mortgage ends in the next six months, talk to a broker today. If you have £10,000 sitting in an easy-access account paying 3%, moving it to a top 1-year fix (around 5.15%) will hand you an extra £215 a year in interest.

HMRC could take smaller tax debts straight from your bank

HMRC currently holds the power to extract tax debts over £1,000 directly from your bank account, provided they leave at least £5,000 in it. Reports pre-Budget suggest both of these thresholds could be lowered, allowing them to go after much smaller debts.

  • Important to note: This only happens after repeated failed contact, and you are given 30 days to object.
  • What it means for you: Stop ignoring the brown envelopes. If you’ve received a letter about underpaid tax—perhaps from savings interest or a side hustle—deal with it now while it's still a conversation, not an automated deduction.

WORTH YOUR TIME:

My favourite listen this weekend wasn't actually wealth-related. It was an episode of the Modern Wisdom podcast featuring philosopher David Deutsch.

It’s a brilliant, deeply philosophical conversation that completely shifted my perspective.

QUOTE OF NOTE:

"For indeed, the investor's chief problem — and even his worst enemy — is likely to be himself."
— Benjamin Graham

A timely reminder that we are far more likely to sabotage our own wealth than any external market force ever could. Focus entirely on what you can control, and tune out the noise.

THE TAKEAWAY:

Budget week always tries to suck you into someone else's agenda. Tax updates, rate chatter, debt headlines, and energy forecasts will dominate the news. All of it matters, but almost none of it is within your control.

What you do control is simple: what you earn, what you keep, and what you put to work.

Raise your income where possible. Keep your lifestyle inflation flat. Invest the surplus on autopilot. That is the entire blueprint for a 9-to-5er building lasting wealth.

Your action step this week:
Open your banking or broker apps exactly once. Check these three things only:

  1. Is your payday standing order into your S&S ISA set up and ready to fire?
  2. Is your workplace pension taking the maximum employer match?
  3. Can you find just one subscription or bill to cancel or renegotiate before payday?

Time required: 20 minutes. Done.

📥 Hit reply and tell me what you changed during your 20-minute audit. I read every response.

See you next week.
